We couldn't get to Cody in time for the 3:00 River Rafting but we could get there for the 5:30 Wild Mustang Tour which I had booked long ago originally for 8:30 the following morning with the same company. They were so so fantastic to rearrange everything so we could still do both! The wild mustangs were so...I don't know. I mean I'm a horse girl so of course I loved it but it was just awesome. Completely. Our guide Mike had to work pretty hard to find them; we drove way east of Cody for probably 30-40 minutes or so and then drove into Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land on what could barely be called a road. We were in an older Suburban and I can't believe the shocks could sustain even one trip in here and he does it twice a day! So we spotted them way way off in the distance on top of a ridge, by the time we got over there they'd gone down behind where we couldn't drive so we had to walk a distance. Then when we got there they decided it was time for their evening drink so they literally took off (which of course was so awesome!). They covered such an incredible distance in the blink of an eye and were gone. So we had to go find them again!
But first we saw a bunch of antelope:
Neat, cute, but not what I'm looking for.
There we go. Speechless.
And here they begin their departure. Why no pictures of them running away? Because I have video! It's really a fast trot for most, a few cantering.
But when they were really taking off, I was trying to get the picture above. We'd spotted a second, smaller herd around a pond. Very very far away. Again, the zoom....
Then we hopped back into that Suburban and found the big herd again!
